I 've lost all my manuals along with some memory, and never delt with a rack and pinion so don't have much to go on. if it is up and down play there us to be shims in the gear box to correct this. surly the steering wheel is not loose on the shaft. roscoe ________________________________ From: "thumps00@gmail.com" To: The MKIV.com National Mailing List Sent: Sat, January 2, 2010 12:59:52 PM Subject: [mkiv] Excessive play in steering wheel Has anyone experienced an issue with excessive play in the steering wheel? I am referring to translational movement, not rotational. According to the service manual, this can be caused by four problems: -worn steering system joints -worn suspension arm ball joints -worn sliding yoke -steering gear housing I did have the rack rebuilt a couple of years ago, and I can't remember if this problem happened before or after the rebuild. I checked the rack and suspension while someone wiggled the wheel back and forth, and I did not see any movement or play in the rack or suspension. Although that wasn't conclusive, at this point I am suspecting something in the steering column is loose or worn. Any ideas or similar experiences?
